When to Travel on a Galapagos Cruise

Visiting The Galapagos

When Is The Best Time Of Year To Travel?

A Galapagos Cruise affords travelers one of the most exotic and adventure-filled trips of a lifetime.  Saturated with endemic and migrated species, the archipelago that changed the world through Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution is the #1 adventure destination in the world.  Filled with thousands of colorful birds, plants, animals, reptiles and vibrant marine life, vacationers of all ages flock to the Galapagos Islands to immerse themselves in nature’s beauty – a veritable Zoo without Walls.

But when is best to go?  A commonly asked question that is often dependent on what you’d like to see while on your Galapagos cruise.  Mating seasons provide certain experiences that some travelers like to witness, for example, while others want to enjoy floral blooms among the many plant species.  Still others want only sunny skies no matter the particular plant or animal cycles.  Since seasonal conditions are helpful as determining factors for many adventurists, Galapagos Explorer has developed a guide as to what prevailing conditions and temperatures are during particular seasons.

Essentially, as an equatorial and subtropical location the archipelago has only two seasons; warm and cool. A factor affecting some travelers’ seasonal choice can be defined by the water temperature of either the cooler Humboldt current or warmer El Nino waters. This can be particularly important to divers.

The Warm Season:

December to May is the warmest time of the year, with an average temperature in the mid 70’s.  As such, it experiences slightly more rainfall although the Galapagos is not affected by large amounts of precipitation at any given time.  During the warm season the sea is typically calmer so it can be a good time to enjoy the richness of marine life.  Even though the islands receive more rain during this season, it is relative and generally travelers will enjoy sunny blue skies and comfortable temperatures.

The Cool Season:

June through November is cooler with highs in the upper 70’s to mid 80’s.  It is typically dryer during these months and the sun is less intense, yet with plenty of it.  The water temperature is cooler during this time of the year, although some El Nino years can create warm surface temperatures, increasing the chance for rain showers.

No matter which season you choose to enjoy the Galapagos Islands, overall you are likely to enjoy fairly temperate weather.  Determining what you’d like see while on your Galapagos cruise, an adventure to the Galapagos Islands will offer you a trip to remember.
