Endangered species

Native animal species in Galapagos are in grave danger,
many endemic species are in decline. They are threatened by destruction
habitat and particularly by the large number of species of fauna and flora that people have entered, voluntarily or involuntarily, in the islands. Among the endangered animals are:

-Mangrove Finch
-Galapagos petrel
-endemic rats
-sharks
-Waved Albatross
-Pinta Island Tortoise
-land snails
-Galapagos Penguin
-Land Iguana Island Santa Fe
-Sea cucumbers

Since the arrival of humans to the islands, species and communities
native and endemic plants have been subject to frequent changes,
mainly due to the introduction of alien species affecting the delicate balance of ecosystems in Galapagos. Direct use with controlled extraction of certain species putting even more pressure
on ecosystems. According to the IUCN criteria (2000),
approximately 50-60% of plant species in Galapagos are threatened. The botanical research conducted by the Charles Darwin Research Station is focused on the protection and restoration of native and endemic plants and their related ecosystems in Galapagos. Among the plants are endangered:

Trees Scalesia
Cactus Opuntia
Calandrina
