The Galapagos Marine Reserve was established in 1998 and is a world of diverse endemic and native species for the most part has not been explored.

It is not known the exact number and types of species that make complex marine ecosystems, but these include marine mammals like the endemic sea lions, fur seals, bonefish and cartilaginous fish such as sharks and rays, as well as marine invertebrates and plant species.
